Kudremukh trek is surrounded by amazing rolling green hills and valleys. This trek goes through forests,small streams and grassland. The total trekking distance is 96 kilometres.This amazing peak is nestled in western ghats,Chikmagalur district. In kannada “Kudremukh” means “horse’s face”. The unique shape of this peak makes this site so special. The total altitude is 6,207 feet above sea level. This site is also nestled with Kudremukh National Park which is the second largest wildlife protected area.
While doing this trek you need to take some basic first aid kit, a valid identity card, Scarf or hat or cap, water bottle,High calorie snacks,medicines, sunglasses, trekking shoes, a trekking pole,raincoat,raincoat for your backpack etc.On your trail there are some routes where you need to trek under the beautiful wide blue sky.
Here you can also enjoy the beauty of the Shola forest region.There you can spot some wildlife also.Here you can spot deer,macaque,malabar giant squirrel, leopard,langur, etc.
Forest Office to Ontimara:
You need to reach the forest office as early as possible, then this will be great for your trip.This trek starts from this office. Before you get on to the beautiful forest part the soothing sound of Somawathi waterfalls will stay with you. Here on the trekking route you will cross many streams and Beautiful waterfalls. At the Shola forest region you will explore some vegetation, grassland.You need to trek through the Shola forest. If you are lucky then you can explore some wildlife in this forest. A proper trekking shoe and a pole will always help you in this forest region.Especially, if you are trekking in the rainy season then this pole will help you a lot. You should remember that in a day only 50 people will get the permission for trekking in this region, so you need to reach the forest office as early as possible.First you need to arrive Ontimara. From here you can find a flat route with the beautiful Kudremukh valley on your right and a mountain view on the left. Trekking for an hour you will reach Ontimara II. From the forest office it will take two hours to reach the second Ontimara.
Ontimara II To The Final Stretch:
Ontimara II to the final stretch is just a three kilometres walk that takes only one hour to complete. This route is a combination of gentle slope and some steep ascent. Here you will get an amazing view of the beautiful greenery landscape. After trekking for some more hours like 20 minutes, the trekking trail starts to get more steeper. From this place the valley and the beautiful peak become visible clearly.
This is a one kilometre distance which can be completed within thirty minutes.Here you can take some rest and spend your time. After reaching the valley you will get a wide view of the greenery. From here a thirty five minutes climb will take you to the top of the kudremukh mountain. Sit here for an hour and enjoy the mesmerising view from the top.Enjoy the mild bliss,beautiful sun,misty clouds around you. Take some pictures here then start descending around 2 pm because it needs a total of three hours to descend down. During the rain, trekking in the forest section will be tough and slippery also, so the trekking pole and raincover will help you this time.
How To Reach:
Using Your Own Vehicle:
First you need to reach the Kudremukh entrance which is just 10 kilometres. From where you need to hire jeeps that will take you to the forest office. If you are coming from Bangalore then there are many routes available to reach Kalasa village.Take the Chikkamagaluru road until you reach Kottigehara.After arriving at Kottigehara take the right turn. This road will take you to the Kalasa village police station. From this place you need to take the left turn to reach the entrance of Kudremukh. Park your vehicle here and take the jeeps that will take you to the forest office.
Using Public Transport:
Many public transport systems are available at Kalasha village. You can book bus tickets from Bangalore to Horanadu via Kalasa village. You need to book online tickets from the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation website.Buses take 7 to 8 hours.Bangalore to Kalasa bus stand is 310 kilometres. After arriving at Kudremukh entrance take the jeeps.this will take you to the forest office.
